BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwiches are the perfect combination of tender, slow-cooked pork shoulder mixed with a smoky, tangy barbecue sauce, piled high on a soft bun. This delicious and easy-to-make sandwich is great for family gatherings, game days, or a casual weeknight meal.
Ingredients
- 3–4 lbs pork shoulder (boneless or bone-in)
- 2 cups BBQ sauce (store-bought or homemade)
- 1 cup chicken broth or water
- 1 large onion, sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon smoked paprika
- 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon chili powder (optional)
- 6–8 sandwich buns
- Coleslaw (optional, for serving)
- Pickles (optional, for serving)

Prepare the Pork:
Season the pork shoulder with salt, pepper, smoked paprika, and brown sugar. Optionally, add chili powder for a bit of heat. -
Cook the Pork:

Place the sliced onions and garlic in the bottom of a slow cooker. Add the pork shoulder on top. Pour the chicken broth over the pork. Cover and cook on low for 8-10 hours or on high for 4-5 hours, until the pork is tender and easily pulls apart. - Oven Method:
Preheat the oven to 300°F (150°C). Place the seasoned pork in a Dutch oven with onions, garlic, and chicken broth. Cover and cook in the oven for 3-4 hours or until the pork is tender and falls apart.

Shred the Pork:
Once cooked, transfer the pork to a cutting board. Use two forks to shred the meat. -
Add BBQ Sauce:
Mix the shredded pork with BBQ sauce. You can add as much or as little sauce as you like, depending on your preference. Return the pork to the slow cooker or Dutch oven to heat through for an additional 30 minutes. -
Assemble the Sandwiches:
Toast the buns if desired. Pile the BBQ pulled pork onto the buns. Top with coleslaw and pickles if using. Serve immediately.
